And then the lights went out.

Last Friday night there was a huge storm here. Just as I got home from work, the rain began. I like rain and thunder and lightning, but this time the lightning was green. I wish I would have caught it on film but I didn't and so you'll just have to take my word for it. Rain like buckets of water pouring down on everything. Trees snapped in half like twigs. Wind whistling over it all. Green. Lightning. The power died.

I thought my life was over.

Then came calm. The tornado sirens faded to silence.

To the east, a rainbow. To the west, the most gorgeous, bright yellow sunset I've ever seen.

Powerless, we sat in the dark. Played Scrabble by candlelight. No tv (if I didn't actually see the Red Wings lose the Stanley Cup it didn't really happen, right? Right?), no air conditioning, no lights, no cooking.

We're fan sleepers, too, so try as we might, sleep evaded us. We played 20 questions in the dark and waited for sleep to take us. We crack each other up. Lovely to know we still like each other after almost nine years of marriage...

I wish the power would go out more often.

I love it when we are able to confirm through unexpected times that love, and like, are still strong.

Just shows how we rely on modern day technology - a storm soon puts paid to that - aren't you brave playing scrabble by candlelight in such attrocious conditions.
And I just loved your remark about liking each other after 9 years!! Try 36 years!! I bet my wife would ask me a lot more than 20 questions as well.
You do lead a dangerous life - thanks for the email - will reply in due course ~ Eddie

We do the same if we have a power outage here. Try to play some games, spend time with each other. Often in times like this we get to know more about each other.

Nice blog. Glad to have visited it :)

I too love a good storm, well maybe not quite to hurricane standards... but just a good old bang about and flashes of spitting fire. I used to think as a child it was true, my auntie had told me storms were just 'God moving his furniture around'. I still can imagine Him having a good old clean in the corners of heaven.
Lovely sky photo's you took.
I am sure the closeness of the family sharing this sleepless night, was a huge barrel of fun. Nasty things won't happen if you laugh at them... another tale my auntie told me.

I love to watch a good storm, but I'd prefer to cuddle up with a significant other instead; however he's states away! all these moments get passed by, sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. I might have to reevaluate. Glad to hear after almost 9 years there's still plenty of love-n-laffs!

btw, I grew up Baptist too! My great grandfather was what they called a "hardshell" Baptist preacher!

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend an evening. Why is it that we need the power to go out to do it? But it helps.

Ooof on the fans though. I'd never sleep!

Sometimes the things you discover in the dark are much more important than the things you see in the light.
